Mein Sang-gkha-Lepov
This is going to be the first story in English due to the request of my Cambodian friends. I had to promise to write in English or they would not teach my how to make the “Sang-gkha-Lepov”. You may wonder what it is anyway… well, we called it ‘pumpkin dessert number one’ and it is a typical, delicious dessert in Cambodia, at least that’s what they told me…

Let me introduce my teacher and her assistants… first I have to mention my teacher, Sophally – since she had some trouble with her computer I managed to solve and showed her how to stay in deep water without drowning, she agreed on showing me how to make this delicious dessert… she got great assistence by her roommate and always busy learning friends Manoren ('Palmking dissert') , Samadet , Thy (loves the Milka chocolate) and Lim… all coming from Cambodia and working at a government agency in Phnom Phen… we all had funny moments in the past introducing the different ways of living and distinction in culture… they told me, for example, why I should never take a picture with three people on it! It is bad luck for all the people on the picture, especially for the one in the middle - I wish they wouldn’t have told me that…

After inviting me to eat Cambodian food and trying this dessert the first time, I had to know how to make it. So the next time they were planning on eating this filled pumpkin I was happy to learn something really useful =) I look pretty professional in making this dessert =) but I have to admit that this is the second approach. The reason for that, are the pictures we took the first time… since Sophally claims to be the next prime minister of Cambodia (and I am positive about that) she didn’t like the pictures of her wearing her sleeping dress and thought it wouldn’t make a good impression on anyone. No problem, the dessert is so good, I surely can eat one more. This time we ask Thy for taking the pictures to make sure it looks good, she proved herself several times in the past… by the way... the dessert has to be eaten on the floor...

For anyone who wants to try it out, here is the original Cambodian recipe freely translated by Sophally =) For those who don’t want to waste time, money and energy on food they have to throw away afterwards – I am claiming to be an expert and can show it to anyone later….

“Song-gkha-Lepov”

1. Take off head of pumkin like square and take out crop (I think she means the seeds=) with a spoon; clean everything inside, wash good

2. One can coconut cream, sugar(lots), salt (little bit), 10-12 eggs (only yellow one – I had some problems with that) and mix together (15 – 20 minutes by hand (important!!!)

3. Put everything in the pumkin, and put it in a pan with water underneath that is boiling, pumkin not touching water – 1 hour microwave (haha… I ask if I can alternatively boil it... yes, I can)

4. Eat cold… and share...
